Reviving My Backyard Vegetable Garden: A Journey to Sustainable Gardening

Another project completed, this time in my own backyard. A few years ago, I had a thriving vegetable garden, but over time, I got busy with other work and the garden fell by the wayside. Now, with summer in full swing, I've decided to revive it, addressing the challenges that come with the heat.

In the past, the intense sun, neighborhood cats treating the beds as their litter box, and birds feeding off my bell peppers before I could harvest them were significant issues. To combat these, I decided to create a secure enclosure for the garden.

I enclosed all sides with a metallic fence up to the roof, designed with small holes to prevent birds from entering and getting trapped while still allowing easy access for bees. This structure provides protection from the sun, keeps out the cats, and deters the birds from snacking on my produce.

From my previous post, you might recall the door I installed; this is where it now resides. With the structure in place, my next focus is on the garden beds. I'll be replacing the old planks and filling them with fresh soil. My son, Adam, has already started preparing a tray of seeds, which should begin sprouting in a few days, just in time for the beds to be ready to receive the new plants.

The layout of the garden is quite simple. I've set up separate areas for brown and green waste. All the leaves cleaned up from around the house will have their place to decompose and become useful for the garden itself. Additionally, all organic waste from the kitchen will be thrown into a compost bin, which I plan to install soon.

Next on the agenda is setting up the plumbing and lighting to ensure the garden thrives, and perhaps I'll even find a spot to hang a hammock for some relaxation amidst the greenery. This project has been incredibly fulfilling, combining practical improvements with a personal touch, and I'm excited to see it flourish once again.
